In the past the popular cliché, doing more with less, meant
taking on additional responsibilities to bridge a temporary shortage
of resources. In the present, doing more with less has become the
norm. And this norm is unlikely to change in the future.
Today's business leaders are constantly being challenged to deliver
better results with fewer resources. Exemplary leaders not only
do this consistently but also leverage this traction to increase
productivity and create a unique form of competitive advantage.
Two obvious questions come to mind in terms of doing more with
less:
- How do exemplary leaders get more traction with (the same or)
fewer resources?
- What do exemplary leaders do differently to improve the performance
of individuals, teams, and the organization?
The short answer is that exemplary leaders model different behaviors
and, as a result, more fully utilize human capital.
The operative words above are behaviors and human capital. Let's
take a closer look at behaviors and human capital in the context
of high-performance leadership.
Our definition of high-performance leadership is simply that exemplary
leaders perform at their best and inspire the best from their people.
Inspiring the best encourages the fullest potential of individuals,
teams, and organizations. Exemplary leadership behaviors strongly
correlate to conditions that foster inspiration and to creating
and sustaining high performance.
Inspirational leaders understand and leverage two dimensions of
human capital. These two dimensions are cognitive and non-cognitive
intelligence. Cognitive intelligence is more commonly known as intelligence
quotient (IQ). Non-cognitive intelligence is less commonly known
and referred to as emotional
intelligence (EI). A simple equation to illustrate the combined
power of these two dimensions is:
IQ + EI = 100% of Potential ©
Now let's take a closer look at the definition of inspiration.
Inspiration literally means a stimulation of the intellect and/or
emotions; to stimulate creativity or action. Exemplary leaders inspire
the best from their people by modeling behaviors which encourage
the IQ and EI dimensions of human capital to thrive.
In summary, doing more with less does not mean being less effective;
doing more with less means better resource utilization while gaining
more traction in the process.
